Fresno, CA (May 11, 2024) – A motorcycle versus car crash early Saturday morning resulted in the deaths of two Fresno residents following a law enforcement pursuit. The collision involved a motorcycle and a sedan on Maroa Avenue near Ashlan Avenue, according to Fresno Police Lt. Henry Garcia III.
Incident Overview: At approximately 1:30 a.m., deputies from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office initiated a pursuit of a motorcycle driven by 25-year-old James Baker. The motorcycle was reportedly traveling north on Maroa Avenue at a high rate of speed. As Baker approached the intersection with Ashlan Avenue, he crashed into a dark-colored sedan that was crossing the intersection westbound. The impact of the collision killed both Baker and the sedan’s driver, 60-year-old Juan Jaramillo. Neither vehicle had any passengers.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Fresno Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is thoroughly investigating the crash, including the sequence of events leading up to the collision and the actions of the deputies involved in the pursuit. Lt. Garcia noted, “We’re also looking at whether or not the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office stopped the pursuit prior to the collision.” This examination will likely determine potential fault and whether proper protocols were followed during the pursuit. The investigation’s findings will be crucial for any legal actions that might follow, such as wrongful death claims by the families of the deceased.
I offer my condolences to the families affected by this accident. I hope that they receive the support they need during this difficult time.
