Josie Cardona Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Semi-Trucks in Las Cruces

Las Cruces, NM (January 31, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash on I-10 West near mile marker 140 claimed the life of 35-year-old Josie Cardona of El Paso on January 31.

Accident Details: The accident occurred around 4 p.m. According to the initial investigation, a semi-truck rear-ended a passenger vehicle as it entered a construction zone, triggering a series of crashes. Cardona, the driver of a passenger vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet determined whether charges will be filed.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Commercial truck accidents in construction zones can present complex liability issues. Given the circumstances of this crash, investigators will likely focus on several key factors:

  • Following Distance: Semi-truck drivers must maintain a safe following distance, especially in construction zones where sudden stops are common. Investigators will determine if tailgating, distraction, or speeding was involved.
  • Construction Zone Safety & Signage: Road construction areas require clear signage and proper traffic control. Investigators will examine whether these safety controls were lacking or insufficient.

Authorities will likely inspect the semi-truck’s black box data, maintenance records, and brake system to reconstruct the events of the accident. If the investigation determines another’s negligence was the cause of the accident, Josie Cardona’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.

I offer my deepest sympathies to Josie Cardona’s family and friends. I hope they receive the support and answers they need.
