Jose Navarette, 56, Killed in Compton Hit-and-Run Collision

Compton, California (February 25, 2026) — A 56-year-old man was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run collision in Compton, according to authorities.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Jose Navarette.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:38 p.m. at the intersection of North Alameda Street and East Dixon Street.

Incident Details: Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Compton Station responded to reports of a collision and found Navarette unconscious in the roadway.

Paramedics from the Compton Fire Department arrived at the scene and attempted lifesaving measures. Despite those efforts, Navarette was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities stated that the driver involved in the collision fled in an unknown direction and did not stop to render aid, as required by law. No vehicle description has been released. The intersection of North Alameda and East Dixon streets was closed for several hours while deputies investigated and processed the scene.

Investigation: The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the fatal hit-and-run.

In nighttime pedestrian collisions, investigators typically examine lighting conditions, vehicle speed, roadway visibility, and whether the pedestrian was in a marked or unmarked crosswalk. Because the suspect vehicle fled, detectives may rely heavily on surveillance footage from nearby businesses or residences, traffic cameras, and potential eyewitness accounts.

Hit-and-run investigations often include canvassing the surrounding area for damaged vehicles, reviewing body shop repair reports, and analyzing debris left at the scene that may help identify the make or model of the vehicle.

Investigators may also review surveillance footage from nearby businesses or residences to track the vehicle’s movements before and after the incident. This comprehensive approach helps law enforcement piece together the events leading up to the hit-and-run.

At this time, authorities have not released additional details regarding the suspect vehicle or potential leads. The investigation remains ongoing.

Legal Considerations: Under California law, drivers involved in a collision resulting in injury or death are required to stop, render aid, and provide identifying information. Fleeing the scene of a fatal collision is a felony offense.

In addition to potential criminal charges if the driver is identified, Jose’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for funeral expenses and other losses stemming from the tragedy.

The loss of life in hit-and-run cases often compounds the grief of families, as unanswered questions and the search for accountability can prolong the trauma.

I offer my condolences to Jose Navarette’s family and loved ones during this challenging time.
