Chula Vista, CA (July 1, 2025) – A 22-year-old man is facing murder and assault charges after allegedly slamming his Tesla into a motorcyclist on Interstate 805 at over 120 miles per hour, killing Jorge Uribe, a 53-year-old father and friend, according to prosecutors.
Accident Details: The fatal incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. in the carpool lane of I-805, just north of Telegraph Canyon Road. Prosecutors say Ulysses Jimenez, driving a red Tesla, became enraged that Jorge Uribe was riding his motorcycle in the carpool lane — a lane motorcycles are legally allowed to use under California Vehicle Code Section 21655.5. Jimenez allegedly accelerated to 126 mph and intentionally rammed Uribe’s motorcycle from behind. The force of the crash was so violent that the motorcycle’s license plate was embedded into the Tesla’s front bumper, and Uribe’s body was thrown 500 feet.
The Tesla then struck a pickup truck carrying six people, including four minors, all of whom sustained injuries. Jimenez allegedly fled the crash on foot, barefoot and carrying a handful of cash, and was later seen trying to flag down drivers before police apprehended him at gunpoint.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Prosecutors revealed that Jimenez admitted to hitting Uribe on purpose, stating he was “speeding like the devil” and had “broken every safety rule possible.” He has been charged with first-degree murder, six counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and hit-and-run causing death. He is being held without bail and faces up to life in prison if convicted.
In California, intentional acts of violence involving vehicles may result in both criminal prosecution and civil wrongful death claims. Families of victims may pursue compensation if intentional or reckless conduct is proven.
I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jorge Uribe, and all those affected by this senseless and tragic act.
