Tucson, AZ (September 29, 2025) – A 28-year-old pedestrian, identified as Jordan Caleb Estes, was struck and killed Monday night in a collision involving a semi-truck at the intersection of North Thornydale Road and West Turkey Lane, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 9:45 p.m. when a semi-truck was involved in a pedestrian collision at the North Thornydale Road and West Turkey Lane intersection. An off-duty Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper witnessed the incident, called 911, and remained on scene until deputies arrived. Responding deputies located a semi-truck parked roadside with the driver and passenger uninjured. Despite lifesaving efforts, Mr. Estes was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials noted that initial assessments did not identify speed or impairment as contributing factors in the collision, and traffic in the area was impacted as first responders documented the scene and coordinated roadway clearance.
Investigation: The PCSD Traffic Unit is leading the investigation and confirmed that neither speed nor impairment were factors for the involved parties. Investigators typically evaluate lighting, sight lines, and driver and pedestrian positioning to determine how the impact occurred. They may review nearby surveillance or dash-camera footage, analyze the truck’s electronic control module data for speed and braking, and take detailed measurements at the intersection. Authorities also noted that, as part of the investigative process, Mr. Estes had been reported missing by a local behavioral health facility. The inquiry will continue as detectives work to establish the sequence of events and whether any additional safety or environmental conditions played a role.
Legal Considerations: Fatal collisions involving a semi-truck raise important questions about duty of care, visibility, and right-of-way. Surviving family members may pursue a wrongful death claim to recover funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and other damages. Evidence preservation—scene photographs, witness statements, lighting measurements, and any available video—can be crucial in determining responsibility. Depending on the findings, potential liability might involve the driver and, where applicable, the motor carrier if issues related to training, supervision, or vehicle equipment are identified. Early consultation can help ensure timely documentation and protect the family’s rights.
My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Jordan Caleb Estes during this difficult time.
