Issac Wilson Shirley Killed; Juliana Aranda and Sandy So Injured in Amador County Head-On Crash

Amador County, California  (January 24, 2026) — A devastating head-on collision in rural Amador County has claimed the life of an infant boy, underscoring the dangers of nighttime driving in hazardous conditions. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Issac Wilson Shirley, a baby from Jackson, who died days after suffering critical injuries in the crash.

Incident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 2:08 a.m. on January 24, 2026, along State Route 16 east of Carbondale Road. Investigators said dense fog was present in the area at the time, significantly reducing visibility for motorists traveling through the corridor.

CHP officials reported that Juliana Aranda, 24, of Jackson, was driving a black 2018 Hyundai Elantra eastbound at an unknown speed. At the same time, Sandy So, 33, also of Jackson, was traveling westbound in a silver 2016 Honda Fit, likewise at an undetermined speed.

For reasons still under investigation, the Hyundai crossed over a solid double yellow line and entered the westbound lane. CHP said So attempted to avoid the collision by braking and steering onto the shoulder, but despite those efforts, the vehicles collided head-on.

Emergency responders arrived to find both vehicles heavily damaged. Firefighters and emergency medical personnel had to extricate So from her vehicle. Both drivers sustained significant injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Issac Wilson Shirley, who was also injured in the crash, was taken to Kaiser Permanente in South Sacramento.

Despite medical intervention, the coroner’s office confirmed that Issac Shirley died on the morning of January 29, five days after the crash.

Investigation: The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the collision. Authorities have stated that alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors, shifting the focus of the investigation to roadway conditions, visibility, vehicle positioning, and potential driver error.

Investigators will examine if reduced visibility caused lane deviation and whether speed suited conditions. They may analyze skid marks, vehicle damage, and electronic data to reconstruct the moments before impact. Because the crash involved a lane crossover on a two-lane highway, they will determine why the Hyundai crossed the centerline and if environmental factors, fatigue, or disorientation contributed. Fog does not automatically mean fault, but it can influence the expected level of care on rural highways at night.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no enforcement actions have been announced at this time.

Legal Considerations: Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of roadway crashes, often resulting in catastrophic or fatal injuries. When a collision results in the death of a child, the legal and emotional consequences for families are especially profound.

Pending the investigation’s results, Issac’s family might have grounds to file a wrongful death claim to cover medical expenses, funeral costs, and the ongoing emotional impact of losing a child. Those who were injured may pursue personal injury claims to recover medical bills, lost wages, and other accident-related expenses.

As the investigation continues, my thoughts remain with Isaac’s loved ones. I also wish Sandy and Juliana a speedy recovery.
