Passenger Killed in Rollover Crash on I-80 in Richmond Over Memorial Day Weekend

Richmond, CA (May 24, 2025) – A two-car crash on westbound Interstate 80 in West Contra Costa County left one person dead and two others injured Saturday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Accident Details: The collision occurred around 6:10 p.m. near the Potrero Avenue exit. A black Fiat and a white Mercedes-Benz reportedly collided, causing the Fiat to overturn. CHP officers responded to the scene and found that the front-seat passenger in the Fiat had died as a result of the crash.

The two drivers were both taken to a local hospital with injuries described as minor. The identity of the deceased passenger has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Legal Considerations: Fatal two-vehicle collisions on highways typically prompt investigations into driver conduct, road conditions, and possible contributing factors like speed, distraction, or mechanical failure. In rollover incidents, seatbelt use and vehicle stability may also be reviewed.

If one driver is found to have caused the collision, the surviving family members of the deceased may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and other damages. The injured driver may also have grounds for a personal injury claim, depending on the findings.

Ongoing Investigation: CHP is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or observed the vehicles before the collision to contact Officer An at (510) 457-2875. Investigators noted that even seemingly minor observations can help reconstruct how the crash occurred.

I extend condolences to the loved ones of the victim and hope the injured drivers recover quickly.
