Jefferson County, IL (March 28, 2025) – Illinois State Police responded to two serious crashes Friday evening on Interstate 64, one of which claimed the life of a truck driver and led to significant injuries for five others.
Incident Details: The first crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near milepost 64 by Woodlawn. A semi-truck rear-ended another semi-truck for unknown reasons. The second truck then struck a passenger vehicle. The driver of the first semi, a 67-year-old man from North Carolina, died from his injuries. He was hauling approximately 200 batteries, prompting a response from the Mt. Vernon Fire Hazmat Team.
Later, around 7:30 p.m., a second crash occurred in the westbound lanes near milepost 59 by Nashville, caused by traffic backup from the earlier crash. A passenger vehicle rear-ended a van, which then struck another car. The following individuals were seriously injured:
- Stephen Noe, 38, of Olmstead, KY (airlifted)
- Allyson Hudnall, 35, of New Harmony, IN, and a 10-year-old child (airlifted)
- Precious Greer, 30, of Alton, IL (transported to a local hospital)
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Both crashes remain under investigation by ISP. Rear-end collisions involving commercial vehicles often raise questions of driver attentiveness, speed, and load management. Victims in these types of crashes may be entitled to personal injury or wrongful death claims, particularly if negligence is confirmed. The presence of hazardous materials in the first crash may also trigger federal safety review protocols.
Our thoughts are with the families of those injured and lost in these tragic events.
