Monterey County, CA (April 11, 2025) – A 53-year-old man from Soledad was killed early Friday morning in a head-on crash on Abbott Street near Firestone Business Park, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Incident Details: The collision was reported at approximately 1:07 a.m. on April 11. According to CHP, a Toyota traveling northbound on Abbott Street veered into the southbound lane for reasons still under investigation and collided head-on with a 2016 Nissan Altima.
The driver of the Nissan, identified by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office as Humberto Lopez Castrejon, was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the impact. The driver of the Toyota was injured, though the extent of their injuries has not been disclosed. CHP confirmed there was no initial indication of impairment on the part of the Toyota driver.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: CHP continues investigating why Toyota veered into oncoming traffic. Possible contributing factors that may be examined include fatigue, distraction, speed, or mechanical failure.
The family of Humberto Lopez Castrejon may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, depending on the outcome of the investigation. Such a claim could seek compensation for funeral costs, emotional distress, loss of financial support, and other related damages.
