Hit-and-Run Accident in South Los Angeles Injures Cyclist Kennedy Coleman

South Los Angeles, CA (September 2, 2024) – On Labor Day night, a tragic hit-and-run incident at the intersection of 79th and Hoover St. in South Los Angeles left 63-year-old Kennedy Coleman critically injured.

Accident Details: The accident occurred after Coleman fell from his bicycle. An unknown driver ran him over and dragged him several feet before fleeing the scene. LAPD South Traffic Bureau Detective Gerald Chavarria reported that the driver stopped at the red light. He should have been able to see Coleman with his headlights. A second driver passed by after the accident without stopping to help.

There is a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver involved. Anyone with information is urged to contact the LAPD South Traffic Division.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several factors will be crucial for a full investigation. Was the driver who hit Coleman distracted, impaired, or reckless? The fact that the driver stopped at a red light and still failed to see Coleman suggests a potential breach of duty to exercise reasonable care.

The hit-and-run nature of the case adds significant legal implications. Under California law, a driver involved in an accident that causes injury or death must stop and assist. Fleeing the scene can result in serious criminal charges and civil liability for the injuries caused.

Regarding civil claims, Coleman might be able to pursue a personal injury claim. Such a claim would seek compensation for his medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and any long-term care he may require due to his critical condition.

My thoughts go out to Kennedy Coleman and his loved ones during this challenging time, and I hope for his recovery.
