Highway 218 Crash Involving Pig Hauler and Construction Truck Leads to Traffic Delays Near Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant, IA (May 30, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash involving a construction semi and a pig hauler caused major delays on Highway 218 North near Mount Pleasant Thursday morning. Emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene just south of Swedesburg as traffic came to a standstill for miles.

Accident Details: The crash occurred near the intersection of Highway 218 Northbound and 170th Street. While the precise sequence of events remains under investigation, authorities confirmed the collision involved a livestock trailer carrying pigs and a construction truck.

Henry County EMS evaluated individuals at the scene, and Medforce Air Medical was dispatched, indicating that injuries may have been serious. Officials have not released the number or identity of those injured.

As a result of the crash, livestock was scattered on the roadway, requiring extensive cleanup and containment efforts. Emergency personnel from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, and nearby agencies worked together to manage traffic and assess the scene.

Legal Considerations: In crashes involving commercial trucks—particularly those carrying livestock or heavy equipment—liability can fall on multiple parties. Injured individuals may have legal grounds to pursue compensation for medical bills, property damage, and lost income, depending on fault.

Investigators will examine whether driver fatigue, improper securing of cargo, mechanical issues, or traffic violations contributed to the collision. In incidents involving livestock haulers, transport conditions and adherence to safety protocols can also play a key role in determining responsibility.

If either driver is found to have acted negligently, injured parties may be able to file claims against the driver, their employer, or the company responsible for the vehicle’s maintenance.

Ongoing Investigation: Authorities have not confirmed the number of animals involved or whether any were injured or killed in the crash. The Iowa State Patrol is leading the investigation and has not yet issued a report on the cause.

As of Thursday afternoon, traffic remained slow-moving in the area, with northbound lanes partially blocked while crews continued to clear debris and livestock. Motorists were advised to avoid the area or use alternate routes.
