Mission Viejo, CA (January 1, 2025) – On January 1, 2025, at approximately 1:45 a.m., a head-on collision at Marguerite Parkway and Pueblonuevo Drive in Mission Viejo tragically claimed the life of 66-year-old Ynes Lagunes-Soto, a San Juan Capistrano resident.
Accident Details: A beloved great-grandmother, Lagunes-Soto, was driving home from church services when her vehicle was struck by another car driven by 26-year-old Geraldine Caicedo-Perez. Lagunes-Soto succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Caicedo-Perez was arrested on charges of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter and is being held at the Orange County Jail.
Investigation: The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating and has urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Driving under the influence (DUI) is generally considered negligent due to its disregard for the safety of others on the road. When Caicedo-Perez chose to drink and drive, she impaired her ability to make sound decisions and react appropriately to traffic conditions.
The charges against Caicedo-Perez—DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter—reflect the severity of her alleged actions. Lagunes-Soto’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Caicedo-Perez. A successful claim could compensate for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and emotional pain and suffering. Evidence of the driver’s intoxication will be needed to support such a claim.
The loss of Ynes Lagunes-Soto is deeply heartbreaking, and my thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time. Her family has set up a GoFundMe page. Please contribute if you are able.
