Bethpage, New York (December 18, 2025) — A Thursday morning crash in Bethpage claimed the life of Gino Vargas, 32, after he was struck by a box truck allegedly driven by an impaired driver, according to local authorities.
Incident Details: The collision occurred along Hicksville Road as Vargas was driving out of a parking lot. Police said Vargas was struck by a box truck operated by Wilber Arevalo Argueta. The impact caused Vargas to suffer catastrophic injuries, including a collapsed lung and a broken pelvis.
Emergency responders transported Vargas to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities said the box truck driver was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated. Argueta was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to be arraigned on December 23 at First District Court in Hempstead.
No additional details have been released regarding traffic conditions, vehicle speeds, or whether other vehicles were involved.
Investigation: Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. In suspected DUI collisions involving commercial or delivery-style trucks, investigators typically focus on toxicology results, driver impairment, and whether the driver failed to perceive or respond appropriately to traffic conditions while entering or traveling along a roadway.
Investigators are expected to review physical evidence from the scene, including vehicle damage, and witness statements to reconstruct the events leading up to and during the crash. They may also examine whether the box truck was traveling at a safe speed and whether Vargas had a reasonable opportunity to complete his maneuver safely before the collision occurred.
Legal Considerations: Crashes involving suspected impaired drivers carry serious criminal and civil implications, particularly when a death occurs. Operating a commercial vehicle while under the influence significantly increases the danger to others due to vehicle size, reduced maneuverability, and longer stopping distances.
For the family of Gino Vargas, pending the outcome of the investigation, may consider pursuing a wrongful death claim to address medical costs, funeral expenses, and the loss of companionship and support caused by a preventable act of impaired driving. While no legal action can undo what happened, accountability plays a crucial role in recognizing the harm caused and seeking justice.
I offer my heartfelt condolences to the Vargas family and loved ones during their difficult time of loss.
