Fatal Police-Involved Collision in San Francisco Claims the Life of Walter Alfredo Castillo

San Francisco, CA (December 14, 2024) – On Saturday morning, December 14, 2024, Walter Alfredo Castillo, 65, of San Francisco, was fatally struck by an on-duty police officer.

Accident Details: The accident occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m. near Bayshore Boulevard and Industrial Street in the Bernal Heights neighborhood. The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) reported that the officer involved was not injured. The department’s traffic investigations unit is examining the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Police officers must drive with reasonable care, considering the safety of pedestrians and other road users. The investigators will focus on the evidence to determine if the officer acted negligently, such as speeding, failing to yield, or not remaining attentive. Additionally, police departments have a duty to ensure their officers are adequately trained for safe driving, particularly in urban environments. If a lack of training or failure to enforce safety policies contributed to this collision, the department itself may share responsibility.

If negligence is found, Castillo’s family may be able to file a wrongful death claim and recover compensation for their loss, including loss of financial support, funeral expenses, and damages for emotional distress.

I extend my deepest sympathies to Walter Alfredo Castillo’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
