Glendale, CA (August 16, 2024) – On Friday evening, August 16, 2024, a tragic accident occurred on the 134 Freeway in Glendale, resulting in the death of 24-year-old Jake Huard.
Accident Details: The California Highway Patrol reports that a silver-colored Mitsubishi, driven by a 19-year-old woman from Pasadena, had stopped in the freeway’s No. 2 lane for unclear reasons. Huard, the right front passenger of the Mitsubishi, exited the vehicle and was standing on the roadway when a black Mazda, traveling at speeds greater than 65 mph in light traffic conditions, collided with the rear of the Mitsubishi. The Mazda then struck Huard, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mitsubishi suffered major injuries, which were reportedly exacerbated by her failure to wear a seatbelt. The Mazda’s driver, a 22-year-old man from El Monte, sustained minor injuries.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several legal questions may require thorough investigation. A key point of inquiry will be why the Mitsubishi was stalled in the middle of the freeway. Investigators must determine whether a mechanical failure or driver error contributed to the vehicle’s stoppage and whether the driver had time to move the vehicle to a safer location.
The Mazda’s speed will also be a crucial factor in the investigation. Although the Mazda traveled in light traffic, its high speed could indicate potential negligence. The driver’s reaction time, attentiveness, and possible impairment will likely be examined to assess whether the Mazda driver could have avoided the collision.
Additionally, the circumstances surrounding Huard’s decision to exit the vehicle on the freeway will be closely scrutinized. Pedestrian accidents on highways are complex, and understanding the exact sequence of events leading to the collision will be essential in determining liability.
Possible Claims: If negligence caused the crash, Huard’s family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault party. Similarly, the injured Mitsubishi driver may be able to file a personal injury claim.
My sincerest condolences go to Jake Huard’s family and friends during this difficult time. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.
