Evan Zeller Killed in Four-Vehicle Crash Involving Semi-Truck on 405 Freeway in Long Beach

Long Beach, CA (May 9, 2025) — A 20-year-old man, identified as Evan Zeller, was killed late Thursday night in a multi-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck on the southbound 405 Freeway near Signal Hill, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Incident Details: The fatal crash occurred at 11:01 p.m. on May 8 near the Atlantic Avenue on-ramp, where CHP officers arrived to find four vehicles involved—a semi-truck, a box truck, and two sedans—all with significant damage. Debris from the collision was scattered across multiple lanes, severely affecting traffic flow in the area.

Zeller was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. His city of residence was not released.

The CHP issued a SigAlert, closing the Atlantic Avenue off-ramp and three freeway lanes for several hours as investigators documented the scene and crews worked to clear the wreckage.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash. Authorities will evaluate whether driver error, speeding, lane changes, or mechanical issues involving the semi or other vehicles contributed to the fatal collision. Multi-vehicle crashes involving commercial trucks often require detailed reconstruction to determine the sequence of impacts and liability.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Zeller’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such a claim could seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and emotional damages.

I extend my deepest condolences to the loved ones of Evan Zeller.
