CAROLINE COUNTY, VA (October 9, 2025) — Authorities have identified 21-year-old Zane P. Jackson as the driver killed Sunday night in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Caroline County. The collision also left two teenagers hospitalized with serious injuries.
Accident Details: The Virginia State Police reported that the crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95. According to investigators, Jackson was driving a Chevrolet sedan when his vehicle collided with another passenger car. Shortly afterward, a 2018 Freightliner tractor-trailer, unable to stop in time, struck the rear of Jackson’s sedan.
The impact crushed the back of the Chevrolet and pushed it into the median. Emergency personnel arrived to find Jackson unresponsive. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His two teenage passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, and their current conditions have not been released.
The driver of the Freightliner, who was hauling a commercial trailer, was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with authorities. Traffic on I-95 was halted for several hours as investigators conducted measurements, collected debris, and examined the damaged vehicles. All lanes were reopened later that night.
Investigation: Virginia State Police troopers and crash reconstruction specialists are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal truck collision. Investigators are analyzing data from the truck’s electronic logging device and reviewing physical evidence from the roadway, including skid marks and debris patterns.
The initial impact between Jackson’s Chevrolet and the other passenger vehicle remains under review, with authorities examining whether speed, following distance, or roadway conditions played a role. Officials said that no charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation will remain open until all evidence is analyzed.
Legal Considerations: Crashes involving commercial trucks and smaller passenger vehicles can result in devastating losses due to the size and weight disparity between vehicles. Determining fault in multi-vehicle collisions often involves reviewing the sequence of impacts, driver behavior, and vehicle maintenance records.
For families coping with a sudden loss, issues such as insurance coverage, medical bills, and funeral costs can add to the hardship. A completed police report and witness statements can help clarify liability and provide a foundation for potential claims related to the collision.
Our condolences go out to the loved ones of Zane Jackson, and we wish recovery to the passengers injured in this tragic crash.
