Xochitl Garcia Ramos, 23, Killed in Texas Crash Involving Commercial Vehicle

Austin, Texas  (February 14, 2026) — A 23-year-old woman was killed early Saturday morning in a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a commercial vehicle along the South Interstate 35 service road, according to Austin police.

Authorities identified the victim as Xochitl Garcia Ramos. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash occurred around 4:18 a.m. in the 13200 block of the South I-35 southbound service road, near Avenida Mercado Street and Puryear Road.

Incident Details: According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded to reports of a collision involving a car and a commercial vehicle in south Austin. When officers arrived, they found Garcia Ramos deceased at the scene.

Police stated that the driver of the commercial vehicle remained at the location and cooperated with investigators. Authorities reported that the other driver was not impaired.

No additional details have been released regarding the sequence of events leading up to the crash, including which vehicle may have had the right of way or whether speed or roadway conditions played a role.

This collision marks Austin’s 12th fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 12 fatalities so far this year.

Investigation: APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit is investigating the crash. In collisions involving commercial vehicles, investigators typically examine vehicle positioning, braking distances, speed, and right-of-way compliance. Crash reconstruction efforts may include reviewing skid marks, debris patterns, and event data from the involved vehicles. Commercial vehicles are often equipped with onboard systems that can provide information about speed, braking, and steering inputs prior to impact.

Early-morning crashes, particularly along service roads adjacent to major highways like I-35, can involve complex traffic patterns, including merging vehicles, turning movements, and limited visibility. Investigators will likely evaluate lighting conditions, signage, and whether either driver attempted evasive action.

While police have stated that impairment was not a factor in the surviving driver’s case, the investigation will focus on whether all traffic laws were followed and whether reasonable care was exercised under the circumstances.

Authorities noted that fatality information may change as the investigation continues. No citations or charges have been announced at this time.

Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111 or submit an anonymous tip through Capital Area Crime Stoppers.

Legal Considerations: Collisions involving commercial vehicles often present additional legal considerations due to federal and state regulations governing commercial drivers.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Ramos’s surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such claims can address funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and other financial and emotional impacts associated with a sudden loss.

During this challenging time, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Xochitl Garcia Ramos.
