Vista, CA (October 14, 2025) – A pedestrian was killed early Tuesday morning in a hit-and-run crash in Vista, according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Accident Details: Authorities said the collision occurred around 5 a.m. on the 700 block of East Vista Way. A vehicle traveling northbound struck a pedestrian in the roadway and fled the scene before deputies arrived. Responding officers found the victim unresponsive, and paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene. The driver did not stop to provide aid or contact authorities. Deputies closed a section of East Vista Way for several hours as investigators documented the crash and collected debris believed to be from the suspect’s vehicle. The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending family notification.
Investigation: The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s Vista Traffic Unit is leading the investigation. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses, examining vehicle parts left behind, and interviewing witnesses to identify the make, model, and driver of the fleeing vehicle. Authorities urged anyone with information about the crash to call the Sheriff’s Department or Crime Stoppers.
Legal Considerations: Leaving the scene of a fatal collision is a felony under California law and may also expose the driver to civil liability. Once identified, the driver could face criminal charges as well as wrongful death claims from the victim’s family. These claims can seek compensation for funeral costs, emotional suffering, and loss of financial support.
