Kaufman County, TX (June 28, 2025) – A devastating multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 near the Hiram Road bridge has claimed the lives of six people and led to criminal charges against a commercial truck driver.
Accident Details: The crash occurred as Alexis Gonzalez-Companioni was driving a tractor-trailer westbound on I-20, approaching traffic that had already stopped due to an earlier collision. Instead of slowing down, the semi-truck slammed into a Ford F-150 carrying five people. Four occupants died at the scene, and a fifth was airlifted in critical condition. The fifth person succumbed to their injuries on Monday.
The truck’s impact triggered a chain reaction, ultimately involving seven vehicles and killing the driver of a Jeep Compass as well. Gonzalez-Companioni now faces six counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the driver, Gonzalez-Companioni, may have fallen asleep behind the wheel of the tractor-trailer. Investigators will likely examine driver logs, black box data, and truck maintenance records. They will also gather evidence, video surveillance, and witness statements to reconstruct the accident.
Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the families of the deceased may have the right to pursue wrongful death claims.
I extend my deepest condolences to the loved ones of the six victims who lost their lives.
