Fresno County, CA (August 9, 2024) – Sandro Lazo, a 16-year-old student from Buchanan High School in Clovis Unified School District, tragically lost his life in a vehicular collision on Perrin Road in Fresno County.
Accident Details and Continuing Investigation: Sandro Lazo was riding his bicycle west on Perrin Road. As he approached the stop sign, he turned southbound onto Fowler Avenue. Unfortunately, Lazo turned directly in front of an oncoming vehicle that did not have a stop sign. The collision was unavoidable, and despite Lazo’s use of a helmet, the injuries he sustained proved fatal. The other vehicle’s driver remained at the scene, and the investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several factors of this case need to be considered to determine the cause and distribution of liability.
Traffic Laws and Signage: The presence or absence of stop signs and the adherence to traffic signals play a critical role in determining fault. In this case, investigators must determine if Lazo stopped at the stop sign. Further, they should investigate other accidents at the intersection to see if there is a history of accidents. If so, the local municipality may be implicated as they knew of the dangerous intersection but failed to take steps to lessen the danger.
