KINSLEY, KS (July 9, 2025) – One person was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when a van and a semi-truck collided near the junction of US-50 and US-56 in Edwards County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Accident Details: The crash occurred at approximately 3:43 p.m. in Kinsley. Authorities say a 2025 GMC Savanna van driven by 33-year-old Theresa M. Wachtendonk of Black Creek, Wisconsin, collided with a 2016 Freightliner semi-truck.
Wachtendonk suffered serious injuries and was transported to Edwards County Medical Center for treatment. Officials confirmed she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the semi-truck, 58-year-old Jesus M. Marquez of El Paso, Texas, was not injured. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. When large trucks are involved in collisions with smaller vehicles, investigators typically review factors such as speed, right of way, driver attentiveness, and road conditions. Commercial drivers and trucking companies have strict safety obligations under federal and state laws, including proper vehicle maintenance and safe operation practices.
Serious injuries resulting from crashes with commercial vehicles often lead to complex legal and insurance matters. Victims may have options to pursue compensation for medical costs, rehabilitation, and other related expenses if negligence is identified.
We extend our well wishes to Theresa Wachtendonk and hope for a full and swift recovery.
