Fremont, CA (May 3, 2024) – The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau has identified Taniela Finau Hafoka Malekamu, a 26-year-old Oakland resident, as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run incident involving a suspected drunk driver in Fremont earlier this month.
Incident Overview: The tragic event occurred in the 45000 block of Fremont Boulevard around 11:30 p.m. on May 3. Hafoka was struck by a vehicle while walking. Despite immediate medical efforts by Fremont police officers and Fremont Fire Department medics, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, identified as 58-year-old Hung Vuu of Sunnyvale, crashed into a traffic signal pole approximately a quarter-mile from where Hafoka was hit. Vuu suffered minor injuries and was arrested at the scene. He faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.
Legal Implications: This incident highlights the severe legal consequences of driving under the influence, particularly when such actions lead to loss of life. The charges against Vuu could lead to significant penalties if he is convicted. Additionally, the family of Taniela Finau Hafoka Malekamu could potentially pursue a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for funeral expenses, loss of income, and the emotional pain of losing a loved one, especially given that he was a father to three children.
My thoughts are with the family and friends of Taniela Finau Hafoka Malekamu during this incredibly difficult time. The family has setup a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs and for supporting the victim’s children. Please contribute if you can.
