Fresno, CA (January 22, 2025) – Authorities have identified Micaela Segura Morales, 98, as the victim of a fatal DUI crash in Fresno. The collision also left an 82-year-old man critically injured.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 5:50 p.m. on January 22 at the intersection of Hamilton and Chestnut Avenues. According to Fresno police, Marcelo Gaytan, 56, was driving northbound on Chestnut Avenue when he struck Morales and the man as they were crossing the intersection. Morales and the man were taken to a hospital, where Morales later succumbed to her injuries. The man suffered severe head, rib, and lung injuries. His current condition has not been disclosed.
Investigation: Gaytan remained at the scene. He was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail. Gaytan faces multiple charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing injury or death, DUI over .08% causing injury or death, and great bodily injury in the commission of a felony.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Driving while impaired is generally considered a breach of the duty of care to drive safely. Intoxication impairs reaction time, judgment, and motor function.
Morales’s family may file a wrongful death lawsuit, seeking compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and emotional trauma. The critically injured man may pursue a personal injury claim to recover medical expenses, lost income, and other damages.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Micaela Segura Morales. I also hope for the injured victim’s full recovery.
