Ohio County, WV (May 9, 2025) — A multi-vehicle crash involving a commercial vehicle pulling a trailer with a roll-off dumpster sent six people to area hospitals Friday evening on eastbound Interstate 70, just past The Highlands and approaching the Pennsylvania state line, according to Ohio County authorities.
Incident Details: The crash occurred at mile marker 13 and was reportedly caused when the commercial vehicle driver, momentarily distracted while adjusting the sun visor due to glare, crested a hill and encountered stopped traffic. Attempting to brake, the driver first swerved right, hitting one vehicle, then swerved left, colliding with four additional passenger vehicles, according to Sheriff Nelson Croft. In total, five passenger vehicles were struck, and six individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency responders from Ohio County EMS, the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office, and several fire departments, including Bethlehem, Valley Grove, Stone Church, and West Alexander VFDs, responded.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The investigation continues, and authorities will examine the sequence of events leading up to the collision, the condition of all vehicles involved, and any potential contributing factors such as driver error, road conditions, or mechanical malfunction.
Pending the investigation’s results, those injured may have grounds to file personal injury claims against the driver and potentially the commercial carrier for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost income.
