73-Year-Old Man Injured After Sedan Becomes Trapped Under Semi in Elk Grove Village

Elk Grove Village, IL (March 26, 2025) – A 73-year-old man from Elk Grove Village was seriously injured Wednesday night after his sedan became wedged under a semi-truck on Devon Avenue, according to local police.

Accident Details: The crash occurred around 7:44 p.m. as the 73-year-old man was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze westbound on Devon Avenue. As he approached the intersection near Ridge Avenue, a 2024 Freightliner truck-tractor turned left out of a parking lot at 202 E Devon Avenue and onto the eastbound lane. The sedan struck the rear driver’s side of the trailer and became trapped underneath.

Emergency crews responded quickly, extricated the man from the vehicle, and transported him to Lutheran General Hospital with serious injuries. He was listed in stable condition. The truck driver, a 65-year-old woman from Arkansas, was not injured.

Legal Considerations: Crashes involving turning trucks and approaching vehicles often center on right-of-way violations and safe turning practices. In this case, the Freightliner driver was cited for failure to yield while making a left turn, suggesting a possible traffic violation contributed to the collision.

Investigators will likely assess visibility at the intersection, turn angle, and whether proper signaling occurred. Depending on the outcome, the injured man may pursue a personal injury claim related to the truck driver’s failure to yield.

Ongoing Investigation: Devon Avenue was closed between Ridge and Carlisle Avenues until 1:30 a.m. Thursday while Elk Grove Village police and accident investigators examined the scene and collected evidence. No additional charges have been announced at this time.

I hope the injured driver makes a full and swift recovery.
