Santa Cruz, CA (November 13, 2024) – On Wednesday, 43-year-old Ryan Fairrington tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run crash.
Accident Details: The incident occurred at approximately 2:45 a.m. Fairrington was struck and killed while walking along Seventh Avenue near Eddy Lane. A dog accompanying Fairrington was also killed.
Investigation: The driver, identified as Pedro Martinez Urbano, 54, of Watsonville, later turned himself into authorities. Urbano has since pleaded not guilty to felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charges.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. California law mandates that drivers involved in an accident, especially one resulting in injury or death, must stop immediately, provide identification, and render aid when possible. Fleeing the scene not only compounds the emotional toll on victims’ families but also constitutes a serious criminal offense.
In addition to any criminal charges, Urbano may also face severe civil charges. Fairrington’s family may be able to file a wrongful death claim. With this claim, they can hold Urbano accountable for his actions and recover compensation, including funeral expenses and emotional distress.
My deepest sympathies are with Ryan Fairrington’s family and friends during this challenging time.
