Michael Hernandez, 52, Killed in Pedestrian Crash on Sepulveda Boulevard in Torrance

Torrance, California (December 23, 2025) — Authorities have identified the man killed in a late-night pedestrian crash in Torrance as Michael Hernandez, 52, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Incident Details: The fatal collision occurred at approximately 11:25 p.m. Sunday along Sepulveda Boulevard near Border Avenue, Torrance police said. Hernandez was struck by a vehicle while in the roadway and sustained traumatic injuries. Paramedics responded, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police stated that Hernandez was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision. The driver involved remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators, and did not show signs of intoxication, according to a Torrance Police Department lieutenant. Traffic in the area was impacted as officers secured the scene and conducted their initial investigation.

Investigation: The Torrance Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. In pedestrian fatalities occurring outside of crosswalks, investigators typically examine visibility conditions, lighting, vehicle speed, and the pedestrian’s position in the roadway at the time of impact.

Detectives will likely review physical evidence such as debris patterns, impact points, and roadway markings to determine where Hernandez was struck and how long the driver may have had to react. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras may also be reviewed to reconstruct the moments leading up to the collision.

Even when impairment is not suspected, investigators often assess whether distraction, speed, or limited nighttime visibility contributed to the incident. The goal is to establish a clear timeline and determine whether all parties exercised reasonable care under the circumstances.

Legal Considerations: Pedestrian crashes are often legally complex, particularly when they occur outside of marked crosswalks. While pedestrians are required to use crosswalks when available, California law still imposes a duty on drivers to exercise due care to avoid striking someone in the roadway.

If the investigation reveals that a driver failed to maintain a proper lookout, was traveling too fast for conditions, or otherwise failed to exercise reasonable care, Hernandez’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, to compensation for funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and the loss of companionship and support. While no legal action can undo the loss, civil accountability can help families navigate the financial and emotional burdens left behind.

I extend my deepest condolences to the Hernandez family and loved ones during this difficult time.
