El Cajon, CA (August 17, 2025) – A man pushing a shopping cart was struck and killed early Sunday morning in El Cajon, and police say a suspected drunk driver is now in custody.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 1 a.m. near the intersection of Chase Avenue and Avocado Avenue. Officers responding to the scene found a damaged fire hydrant spraying water into the air and a broken power pole. Nearby, the pedestrian was found deceased.
Authorities report that the driver fled the scene before police arrived. Using automated license plate readers, investigators identified a white GMC SUV recorded near the collision. The vehicle was later located unoccupied on Sandalwood Drive, with its airbag deployed and damage consistent with the crash.
Police located the suspected driver at a nearby residence, where he allegedly showed signs of intoxication. He was arrested without incident.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Investigators will review toxicology reports, dashcam footage, skid marks, vehicle speed, and witness statements to reconstruct the accident.
Depending on the facts of the investigation, the victim’s family may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim, seeking damages for funeral costs, loss of companionship, and the financial and emotional support the deceased would have provided.
I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased pedestrian.
