Los Angeles, CA (March 27, 2025) – Oscar Lopez, 22, was killed early Wednesday morning in a hit-and-run crash while skateboarding to work near the intersection of 6th Street and Catalina Street in Koreatown.
Incident Details: The fatal crash occurred around 6 a.m. as Lopez was riding his skateboard westbound. Surveillance footage from a nearby business showed a gray four-door sedan striking Lopez before continuing without stopping. The impact was so severe that debris from the car and Lopez’s skateboard was scattered across the roadway. Emergency personnel responded and closed 6th Street between Berendo Street and Kenmore Avenue for several hours during the investigation.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities are still searching for the driver of the gray sedan. Despite video footage capturing the crash, no identifying information about the driver has been confirmed. Detectives are working to analyze debris from the scene, including vehicle parts, to potentially identify the suspect. In fatal hit-and-run cases, criminal charges are typically accompanied by civil claims, and Lopez’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. The lack of accountability has deeply affected the local skateboarding community, which is now calling for justice.
My deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Oscar Lopez.
