Kanawha County, WV (March 10, 2025) – A collision on Interstate 64 East near Cross Lanes on Monday night claimed the life of a semi-truck driver and left the driver of a passenger vehicle seriously injured. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the cause of the crash.
Incident Overview: The crash occurred around 8:40 p.m. near mile marker 49, between the Cross Lanes and Institute exits. According to officials, a semi-truck struck a passenger vehicle while merging, pinning it against a concrete wall as both vehicles continued eastbound. The passenger vehicle caught fire while the semi-truck crossed the highway, hit a guardrail, and overturned.
Emergency responders pronounced the semi-truck driver dead at the scene and took the driver of the passenger vehicle to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The identities of those involved have not yet been released, pending notification of family.
The semi-truck was carrying hazardous material, which first responders quickly contained. Authorities confirmed there was no threat to public safety.
Investigation and Legal Context: Officials are reviewing whether the truck driver may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash. Investigators are also evaluating the truck’s mechanical conditions and whether factors such as driver distraction, fatigue, or speed played a role.
If the truck driver or their employer disregarded safety regulations or neglected to address known health concerns or equipment malfunctions, they could be liable.
