Columbus, OH (August 8, 2025) — One person was killed Friday morning in a crash involving a semi-truck and a van at the junction of I-270 and US 33 in southeast Columbus.
Incident Details: According to Columbus police, the collision occurred shortly before 11 a.m. when a Chevy van traveling south on I-270 slowed or stopped in traffic south of US 33. A semi-truck traveling behind the van struck it, overturned, and left the roadway. The van’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the semi driver’s condition has not been disclosed. All lanes of I-270 South at US 33 West and the US 33 East ramp were closed for several hours during the investigation and cleanup.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: While the investigation is ongoing, authorities will likely review traffic camera footage, witness accounts, and physical evidence from the scene to determine why the van slowed or stopped and whether the semi-truck driver was following at a safe distance. Commercial vehicle collisions often involve an examination of the truck driver’s logs, vehicle maintenance records, and adherence to federal hours-of-service rules.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, the surviving family members of the deceased may have grounds for a wrongful death claim to recover funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and other damages.
