Nasir Nadim, 59, Dies After Box Truck Hit-and-Run in New York City

Brooklyn Heights, New York  (January 23, 2026) — A 59-year-old Brooklyn man has died after being struck by a box truck in a hit-and-run incident in Brooklyn Heights, according to police.

Authorities identified the victim as Nasir Nadim, of Brooklyn. He died approximately one week after the crash from injuries sustained in the collision.

The incident began around 1:00 p.m. on January 23 near State Street and Clinton Street and ended near Cadman Plaza West and Clinton Street.

Incident Details: According to police, Nadim and the driver of a Freightliner box truck were initially involved in a crash blocks away from where the fatal injuries ultimately occurred. Investigators say that following the initial collision, Nadim grabbed onto the driver’s side door of the truck.

Police reported that Nadim held onto the vehicle for approximately 600 feet as the truck traveled northbound on Cadman Plaza West. At some point, he fell onto the roadway and was subsequently struck by the truck.

Emergency medical personnel transported Nadim to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical intervention, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities said the truck driver did not remain at the scene. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made.

Investigation: The New York Police Department is investigating the circumstances leading up to the initial collision and the events that followed. In complex hit-and-run cases involving multiple points of impact, investigators typically work to reconstruct a detailed sequence of events. This process may include reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses, traffic cameras, and residential buildings. Brooklyn Heights is densely monitored, and video evidence could be crucial in identifying the vehicle and confirming the truck’s route.

Investigators are also likely analyzing physical evidence from both locations,  including roadway markings, debris, and vehicle damage patterns, to determine how the initial crash occurred and whether the driver was aware of Nadim’s presence while the truck was moving.

In hit-and-run cases, authorities focus on whether the driver failed to stop, render aid, or report the incident as required by law. Locating the Freightliner box truck and identifying the driver remain central to the investigation.

Legal Considerations: Fatal hit-and-run crashes often raise both criminal and civil legal issues. Drivers involved in collisions have a legal duty to stop, remain at the scene, and render reasonable assistance to injured parties. Failure to do so can result in serious criminal charges.

From a civil standpoint, the Nadim family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence or unlawful conduct is established. These claims can cover funeral expenses, medical costs incurred before death, and the emotional and financial impact of the loss.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to Nasir’s family and loved ones in this challenging time.
