Two Killed, Four Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 101 Near Chualar River Road

Monterey County, CA (October 12, 2025) – Two people were killed and four others injured Sunday evening when a wrong-way driver caused a multi-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 101 near Chualar River Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Accident Details: The crash occurred around 8 p.m. when a white Kia SUV driven by a 41-year-old Salinas man was traveling north in the southbound lanes. The Kia collided head-on with a black Honda sedan driven by a 46-year-old Arizona man, resulting in catastrophic damage. A third vehicle, a white Toyota, was also struck. Both the Kia and Honda drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Three passengers in the Kia suffered varying injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals, while the Toyota driver sustained minor injuries. Southbound traffic was shut down for several hours as emergency responders cleared the scene and investigators documented the crash.

Investigation: CHP is still determining how the Kia entered the wrong side of the freeway. Officers said it is not yet clear whether drugs or alcohol were factors. Investigators are reviewing vehicle debris, roadway markings, and potential witness or surveillance footage to confirm the sequence of events. The Monterey County Coroner’s Office will release the victims’ names after next-of-kin notifications.

Legal Considerations: Wrong-way collisions are often among the deadliest types of crashes due to high closing speeds. Determining liability can involve assessing driver impairment, mental state, or roadway signage that may have contributed to the wrong entry. Families of victims may pursue wrongful death claims for funeral expenses and emotional losses if negligence is established. Injured survivors may also seek compensation for medical bills and rehabilitation.

This was a devastating tragedy for the victims’ families and the Monterey County community. My deepest sympathies are with those affected.
