Dos ayudantes del sheriff heridos graves en un accidente de camión en la interestatal 27 de Lubbock

Lubbock, Texas (September 8, 2025) — Two Lubbock County sheriff’s deputies were seriously injured Monday morning after being struck by a tractor-trailer while assisting a stranded driver on Interstate 27, according to the sheriff’s office.

Incident Details: Deputies A. Cavazos and J. Martinez were helping a motorist near the 98th Street overpass around 9:15 a.m. when a tractor-trailer collided with their patrol car. The impact pinned the deputies between the disabled patrol unit and the guardrail of the overpass, leaving one deputy dangling from the structure by one leg. Witnesses at a nearby gas station rushed to help until firefighters arrived. Both deputies were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and are expected to recover. Another person was moderately injured and also hospitalized.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities are investigating the crash, including whether driver error, speed, or fatigue contributed to the tractor-trailer’s impact. Crashes involving law enforcement officers often bring both criminal and civil liability into play. In addition to workers’ compensation benefits, injured deputies may pursue civil claims against the truck driver and trucking company to cover medical expenses, long-term care, and lost wages.

I wish Deputies Cavazos and Martinez a full recovery and extend my support to their families and colleagues during this difficult time.
