Kyle McCombes Severely Injured in I-95 Hit-and-Run with Tractor-Trailer in Volusia County

VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL (November 11, 2025) — A 28-year-old Jacksonville man sustained life-altering injuries Wednesday when a tractor-trailer struck him on Interstate 95 North in Volusia County and fled the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol identified the victim as Kyle McCombes.

Accident Details: The Florida Highway Patrol reported that McCombes was on the outside shoulder of I-95 North working on his disabled car when the crash occurred. A semi-truck traveling north in the outside lane struck McCombes, who was standing on the shoulder. The driver did not stop to render aid and continued driving.

McCombes’s fiancée found him lying on the ground two hours later after he called to tell her he was stranded. The impact of the truck amputated his right leg, crushed his right arm and hand, and left gashes in his head. He was rushed to a hospital in Daytona Beach in critical condition.

McCombes has undergone four surgeries since arriving at the hospital, with another surgery scheduled for next week. His parents drove down from Jacksonville to be with him and remain by his side. They believe his recovery could take years.

McCombes ran a small transportation logistics business and was the breadwinner for his household, which includes his fiancée and two young children. He currently has no insurance, leaving the family facing mounting medical bills and household expenses. His mother, Julie McCombs, created a GoFundMe to help pay for expenses related to the incident.

Investigation: The Florida Highway Patrol is searching for the driver and vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. Officials said the semi-truck should have right-side damage from the impact. Anyone with information is asked to call *FHP (*347) or CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS.

Julie McCombs said she hopes the driver will come forward. “We’re not out for any type of vengeance,” she said. “We don’t want to see you sit in jail. We just want you to come forward so that we have some type of closure on what happened to him. Someone hit him and left him and left him on the side of the road to die.”

Fortunately, Kyle McCombes is alert and talking, but he has a long road of recovery ahead.

Legal Considerations: Hit-and-run crashes that result in catastrophic injuries create both criminal and civil liability for the fleeing driver. Florida law requires drivers involved in crashes causing injury to stop immediately, render aid, and provide information. Leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury is a felony that carries significant prison time.

Victims of semi-truck hit-and-run crashes face enormous medical expenses, lost income, and long-term rehabilitation costs. When the responsible driver cannot be immediately identified, victims may pursue compensation through their own uninsured motorist coverage if available. Once the driver is located, personal injury claims can seek damages for medical bills, future care needs, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Cases involving commercial trucks may also implicate the trucking company if the driver was operating within the scope of employment. Identifying the truck and driver becomes essential for holding all responsible parties accountable.

We wish Kyle McCombes strength and healing as he begins his long recovery journey.
