Bakersfield, CA (April 21, 2024) – A tragic accident claimed the life of a local motorcyclist in Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office. The victim was identified as 59-year-old Kenneth Lee Armstrong.
Incident Overview: The crash occurred in the area of River Boulevard and Bernard Street. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were called to the scene at around 4:26 p.m. on April 21, 2024. According to their preliminary findings, Armstrong was traveling northbound on River Boulevard at an undetermined speed when he lost control of his Honda motorcycle at the intersection with Bernard Street. The investigation indicates that Armstrong veered right off the roadway, colliding with a raised curb, two traffic signal power boxes, and a street sign. The impact was severe enough to eject him from the motorcycle, resulting in fatal injuries.
Investigation and Legal Implications: CHP has noted that the exact reasons for Armstrong losing control are still under investigation, including whether impairment from alcohol or drugs was a contributing factor. However, if they weren’t then the investigation should focus on other potential factors, such as a mechanical failure with the motorcycle due to a manufacturing defect or poor road conditions. If it is found that the motorcycle had a defect, the manufacturer could be liable for wrongful death. Additionally, if the road layout or conditions at the intersection contributed to the accident, there could be grounds for a claim against the local government or agency responsible for road maintenance and design. These possibilities highlight the need for a thorough investigation to ensure all factors are considered.
My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Kenneth Lee Armstrong. I hope that the investigation is able to reveal the cause of this tragic accident.
