Baker County, OR (April 9, 2025) – An 85-year-old man from Baker City was killed late Saturday night in a collision involving a semi-truck on Interstate 84, according to the Oregon State Police. The crash occurred near milepost 345 and remains under investigation.
Incident Overview: The fatal crash took place at approximately 10:52 p.m. on April 5. A Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by John Carl Allyn, was stopped in the eastbound slow lane of I-84 for unknown reasons when it was rear-ended by a Volvo commercial motor vehicle and trailer.
The Volvo was being driven by 36-year-old Anatolii Gulei of Vancouver, Washington, who was reportedly uninjured in the collision. Allyn, however, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by LifeFlight to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
No other injuries were reported at the scene, and both vehicles were cleared following the investigation and emergency response.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Oregon State Police are investigating the cause of the crash, including why Allyn’s vehicle was stopped in an active travel lane. They are also investigating additional factors, such as mechanical failure, medical emergency, reduced visibility, driver attentiveness, speed, and braking response of the semi-truck operator.
Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Allyn’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence is established. Compensation could be sought for funeral costs, emotional loss, and other damages related to the fatal crash.
