North Platte, Nebraska (November 4, 2025) — Authorities have identified the man killed Monday night in a collision between a motorized bicycle and a box truck as 55-year-old Jason Miller of North Platte. According to the North Platte Police Department, Miller was struck at the intersection of 12th and Jeffers streets and later died at a local hospital.
Incident Details: The crash occurred around 7:34 p.m. when a Freightliner box truck driven by a 70-year-old North Platte man was traveling south on Jeffers Street. Investigators said Miller was heading north in the easternmost lane on his motorized bicycle when he attempted to make a left turn onto 12th Street. The truck struck the bike during the turn.
Emergency crews from the North Platte Fire Department EMS transported Miller to Great Plains Health, where he was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m. The driver of the box truck was not injured and remained on the scene, cooperating with police.
Investigation: The North Platte Police Department is conducting a full investigation into the cause of the crash. Investigators are analyzing roadway evidence, vehicle impact points, and tire marks to determine how the collision occurred. They will also examine whether visibility, lighting, or driver reaction time contributed to the incident, as the crash happened after sunset.
In cases involving commercial vehicles, investigators typically review the truck’s mechanical condition, maintenance records, and potential blind spot limitations. They may also analyze dashcam or nearby surveillance footage to confirm positioning at the time of impact. Toxicology testing for both drivers, along with a detailed reconstruction of the scene, will help determine whether any violations or contributing factors played a role in the collision.
Legal Considerations: Crashes involving motorized bicycles and large commercial vehicles often raise serious questions about right-of-way and driver awareness. Under Nebraska law, motorized bicycles are entitled to share the road, and all drivers have a duty to maintain a proper lookout and yield when making turns across traffic lanes.
If the box truck driver is found to have failed to exercise due care, the family of Jason Miller may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim for funeral costs, emotional loss, and related damages. A thorough civil investigation can also determine whether visibility, roadway design, or vehicle maintenance failures contributed to this fatal crash.
I extend my deepest condolences to the Miller family and loved ones as they mourn this tragic loss.
