Jarad J. Pruitt and Tramaine Pruitt Killed, Semi-Truck Driver Injured in Alabama Head-On Crash

Jefferson County, Alabama  (February 1, 2026) — Two people were killed early Sunday morning in a violent head-on collision involving a pickup truck and a commercial tractor-trailer on Interstate 22 in Jefferson County, according to Alabama law enforcement officials. Authorities identified the victims as Jarad J. Pruitt, 29, of Aliceville, and Tramaine Pruitt, of Birmingham. Both died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The fatal collision occurred in the pre-dawn hours along a stretch of I-22 near the 91-mile marker, approximately one mile west of Forestdale. The incident has left two families grieving and prompted an ongoing investigation into how the crash unfolded on the interstate.

Incident Details: According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the crash involved a Ford pickup truck and a Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling in opposite directions. Investigators said the pickup and the 18-wheeler collided head-on, resulting in catastrophic damage.

Jarad J. Pruitt was a passenger in the Ford pickup at the time of the crash. The driver of the pickup, Tramaine Pruitt, also suffered fatal injuries. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency personnel.

The driver of the tractor-trailer survived the collision but sustained injuries and was transported to UAB Hospital for medical treatment. The extent of those injuries has not been publicly released.

Traffic on Interstate 22 was impacted for several hours as authorities secured the scene, provided emergency medical care, and began their preliminary investigation.

Investigation: The Highway Patrol Division of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is leading the investigation into the crash. Troopers are working to determine how the vehicles came into opposing lanes of travel and whether speed, driver fatigue, roadway design, or other factors contributed.

Authorities will analyze physical evidence like debris patterns, impact points, and vehicle positions, along with braking data, steering inputs, and onboard electronic logs. Since the crash happened early morning, investigators may check visibility, lighting, and driver impairment or distraction. Weather, traffic, and road hazards will also be considered. No fault or charges have been determined yet.

Fatal interstate crashes involving commercial vehicles are typically reconstructed in detail to establish a clear sequence of events and determine whether the collision was preventable.

Legal Considerations: Head-on crashes involving tractor-trailers often raise serious legal questions due to the size and weight disparity between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. Commercial drivers and trucking companies are subject to strict safety regulations, including rules governing hours of service, vehicle maintenance, and safe operation.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the Pruitt family may consider pursuing wrongful death claims to address funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and the profound emotional impact of Jarad’s and Tramaine’s sudden loss. If evidence shows negligence or regulatory violations, additional parties, including employers or contractors, may be liable.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of Jarad J. and Tramaine Pruitt as they mourn this heartbreaking loss.
