San Diego, CA (May 2, 2024) — Authorities say 45-year-old Jairo Lazaro-Galicia died after being struck by a vehicle driven by a suspected DUI driver at a City Heights intersection last week. The tragic incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Thursday at the intersection of El Cajon Boulevard and 50th Street.
Incident Overview: Lazaro-Galicia was crossing El Cajon Boulevard when an eastbound vehicle hit him, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Emergency responders transported Lazaro-Galicia to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. His community of residence is unknown at this time. The 20-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, police stated.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The San Diego Police Department is investigating the accident, reviewing whether the driver violated any traffic laws or exhibited negligence that led to the fatal crash. Given the driver’s suspected impairment, serious DUI charges are expected. Lazaro-Galicia’s family may also want to explore the possibility a wrongful death claim to recover compensation for funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and other damages stemming from this tragic loss.
