Lancaster, CA (April 8, 2025) – A 38-year-old man was killed late Monday night in a fatal hit-and-run collision in Lancaster, and authorities are now searching for the driver who fled the scene. The victim has been identified as Gilbert Amaro by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
Incident Overview: The collision occurred around 11:40 p.m. near the intersection of Avenue J and Hanstead Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators say Amaro was walking northbound across Avenue J, outside of a marked crosswalk, when a westbound sedan struck him.
The driver of the first vehicle did not stop and fled the scene. Moments later, a second vehicle, a Toyota Camry, also traveling westbound, struck Amaro while he was still in the roadway. Unlike the initial driver, the Camry’s driver stopped immediately, attempted to assist the victim, and cooperated fully with law enforcement.
Amaro was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics. No description of the first vehicle or its driver has been released by authorities, and the investigation is still ongoing.
Anyone with information about the accident or the vehicle involved is encouraged to contact the police.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities continue their investigation and are expected to review any available security footage or witness testimony to identify the initial vehicle and driver in the hit-and-run.
If that driver is located and depending on the outcome of the investigation, Amaro’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, which could provide compensation for funeral expenses, emotional distress, and other damages related to their loss.
