FREMONT, WI (October 23, 2025) — A two-vehicle crash in Waupaca County claimed one life and left another person hospitalized Wednesday morning, according to the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office.
Accident Details: Deputies were called to the intersection of U.S. Highway 10 and Old Highway 49 in Fremont at around 10:30 a.m. Reports indicate a truck pulling a trailer was heading east on Highway 10 when it collided with a car traveling north on Old Highway 49.
Emergency responders found the car’s driver trapped inside the wreckage. Crews worked to free the person and provided medical aid, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to a local hospital.
Authorities closed a section of the highway for several hours while investigators documented the scene and tow trucks removed both vehicles. Traffic was redirected to nearby roads until the area was cleared.
Investigation: The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol are examining factors that led to the collision. Investigators are reviewing whether speed, right-of-way, or limited visibility at the intersection played a role. Skid marks and vehicle positions will be analyzed as part of the crash reconstruction.
Officials have not yet identified those involved as next of kin are being notified. Updates are expected once the initial findings are complete.
Legal Considerations: When a truck and passenger car collide at a rural intersection, the force of impact can be far greater for the smaller vehicle. Investigators will be looking at driver awareness and whether either motorist failed to yield or misjudged distance while entering the crossing.
The results of the official report may determine if civil liability applies, particularly if one driver disregarded a traffic control or entered the intersection without a safe gap. Insurance assessments will likely account for factors such as visibility, road layout, and any prior crash history at this location.
Findings from this review could prompt local officials to consider roadway adjustments or additional signage along this stretch of Highway 10.
We extend condolences to the family of the person who lost their life and wish the injured driver a steady recovery.
