Wichita, KS (July 1, 2025) – A man in his 80s died Tuesday morning following a collision between a bicycle and a semi-truck northwest of Wichita.
Accident Details: The fatal crash occurred around 9:15 a.m. near the intersection of 247th Street West and 29th Street North. Lt. Steve Olsen with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office stated that four bicyclists were riding in the area when the crash occurred. It appears the group had become separated, and the collision involved one of the cyclists and a northbound semi-truck.
When deputies arrived, they found the man suffering from life-threatening injuries, which he later died from. The semi-truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Investigators are working to reconstruct the movements of the bicycles and the truck leading up to the collision. Questions being considered may include:
- Whether the cyclist was in or near the traffic lane;
- Road conditions, visibility, and signage in the area;
- Who had the right of way;
- The position of the cyclists and the semi-truck; and
- The speed of the semi-truck.
Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the family of the deceased may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.
I offer my sincerest condolences to the deceased’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
