Nipomo, CA (April 28, 2025) – Two drivers were killed Monday evening in a devastating wrong-way, multi-vehicle crash on Orchard Road in Nipomo.
Incident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol, 70-year-old Fernando Contreras of Santa Maria was driving a Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Orchard Road when he crossed into the northbound lane near Cherry Blossom Place around 6:30 p.m. Contreras crashed head-on into a Toyota RAV4 driven by 49-year-old Darlene Leticia Scruggs of Nipomo. The impact pushed the Toyota off the road and caused the Silverado to overturn, striking a BMW traveling behind the RAV4. Both Contreras and Scruggs were pronounced dead at the scene, while the BMW driver sustained minor injuries.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities believe speed and possible wrong-way driving contributed to the crash. The California Highway Patrol has not yet confirmed whether drugs or alcohol were involved. Investigators are asking witnesses or anyone with information to contact Officer R.
