Bicyclist Danny Chiu, 69, Killed in Semi-Truck Collision in Fremont

Fremont, California (January 2, 2026) — A Friday afternoon collision in Fremont claimed the life of Danny Chiu, a 69-year-old Fremont resident, after his bicycle collided with a semi-truck along Osgood Road, according to the Fremont Police Department and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau.

Incident Details: The crash occurred sometime after noon on the west side of Osgood Road. Authorities said Chiu was riding his bicycle southbound when he collided with a semi-truck that was turning into the parking lot of a nearby business. According to Fremont police, the point of impact was the front driver’s side of the semi-truck and the oncoming bicyclist.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Chiu suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the location. Police reported that the driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities stated that drug or alcohol impairment is not suspected to be a contributing factor in the collision. No additional injuries were reported.

Investigation: The Fremont Police Department Traffic Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. In fatal bicycle collisions involving large commercial vehicles, investigators typically focus on turning movements, right-of-way, and whether the driver properly checked for cyclists before initiating a turn across a bike’s path of travel.

Investigators will likely analyze the driveway’s geometry, the truck’s turning radius, sightlines for the driver and bicyclist, and physical evidence such as scrape marks, debris, and vehicle damage to identify impact points and initial positions. They may review nearby surveillance footage, dash cam data, roadway signs, bike lane markings, traffic speed, and consider if the truck’s size or blind spots affected the cyclist’s view during the turn. Extra caution is necessary for commercial vehicles near bicyclists due to limited visibility and collision risks.

Legal Considerations: Bicycle crashes involving semi-trucks are often catastrophic because cyclists lack physical protection and are especially vulnerable when a large vehicle turns across their path. From a civil perspective, determining liability involves assessing whether the truck driver exercised reasonable care while turning, which includes yielding to oncoming bicycle traffic and ensuring that the maneuver could be completed safely.

These cases may assess if the business driveway warns drivers about bicycle traffic and consider additional safety measures to prevent fatal collisions. While impairment is ruled out, negligence could still stem from lapses in observation, misjudgments, or ignoring a cyclist’s right to go straight.

The family of Danny Chiu may consider pursuing a wrongful death claim, depending on the final investigation results, to cover funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and the emotional and financial consequences of losing a loved one. Accountability, even in complex traffic scenarios, plays a crucial role in honoring a life lost and seeking meaningful answers.

I extend my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Danny Chiu as they grieve this tragic loss.
