CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. — Two sisters were killed in a crash with a tractor-trailer Thursday afternoon. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the collision occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Cherokee County 29 near Cherokee County 28, about nine miles northeast of Piedmont.
Incident details indicate that 18-year-old Lillian McCain and her 12-year-old sister, Libby McCain, were traveling together when their vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer. Both girls died at the scene. The crash happened just one day before Lillian’s 19th birthday.
The investigation is being handled by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Community members are mourning the loss, with Cherokee County School Superintendent Michael Welsh confirming Libby was a sixth grader at Spring Garden School and Lillian had just begun classes at Jacksonville State University after graduating from Spring Garden High School. Jacksonville State President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. called the tragedy unimaginable.
