Carmen Nava, 65, Identified as Pedestrian Killed While Crossing Main Street in Salinas

Salinas, California (December 8, 2025) — Authorities have identified Carmen Nava, 65, of Salinas, as the woman who died after being struck by a vehicle Sunday evening while crossing Main Street at Hardin Parkway. Nava was transported to a local hospital but did not survive her injuries.

Incident Details: The collision occurred around 6 p.m. as Nava crossed the street near the Teriyaki Madness restaurant. A witness told KSBW that she was running across the roadway when the vehicle struck her, throwing her an estimated 30 to 45 feet. Bystanders and responding officers attempted CPR until paramedics arrived.

The Monterey County Coroner’s Office confirmed Nava’s identity Monday morning. She was a longtime employee of the Salinas Union High School District, serving most recently as a Safety and Security Officer at Washington Middle School. District officials said she was set to retire in December and had been a cherished member of the school community since the 1990s.

Investigation: Salinas police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Detectives will examine physical evidence from the scene, including impact points, skid marks, debris distribution, and the point of rest of both the vehicle and the victim.

Because the collision occurred at a signalized intersection, investigators will likely analyze traffic light sequencing, pedestrian crossing timing, and whether Nava entered the roadway during a permitted phase. They may review nearby surveillance recordings from businesses, traffic cameras, or dashcams to determine driver speed, visibility, and whether any evasive action was taken.

In pedestrian fatalities, investigators also assess roadway lighting, sightlines, weather conditions, and the driver’s level of attention. Toxicology testing of the driver and a mechanical inspection of the vehicle are standard steps to rule out impairment or equipment malfunction. A thorough reconstruction will help Nava’s family and her school community understand how this tragic incident occurred.

Legal Considerations: Under California law, drivers must exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians, even when the pedestrian may be outside a designated crosswalk or crossing unexpectedly. If evidence shows that the driver was speeding, distracted, or failed to maintain a proper lookout, civil liability may arise even when criminal charges are not filed.

For Carmen Nava’s family and colleagues, the loss is profound. Her death leaves a deep void for her loved ones and for the school community she supported for so long.

A wrongful death claim may allow her family to seek accountability and compensation for funeral expenses, emotional grief, and the long-term loss of her companionship and support. While no legal outcome can fully measure the impact of losing someone so dedicated and beloved, it can help stabilize the future for those who depended on her.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the Nava family, friends, colleagues, and students during this difficult time.
