Brookings County, SD (May 27, 2025) – Two men sustained injuries in a two-vehicle collision at a rural intersection in Brookings County Monday evening, according to a report from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 5:04 p.m. on May 27 at the intersection of 207th Street and 476th Avenue. Authorities say 35-year-old Robert Bogstad of Holland, Minnesota, was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 southbound on 476th Avenue, towing a flatbed trailer carrying a 1999 GMC Sonoma.
As Bogstad entered the intersection, his pickup collided with a 2014 Kenworth semi-truck traveling eastbound on 207th Street. The semi, driven by 71-year-old Lyle Koopman of Ivanhoe, Minnesota, was hauling a belly dump trailer when the crash occurred.
Investigators say Bogstad failed to stop at the posted stop sign before entering the intersection. The impact caused his pickup to detach from the trailer, launching the towed Sonoma off the trailer. Koopman’s semi veered into a ditch, hit a driveway approach, and briefly went airborne before coming to rest.
Emergency responders from White Fire Department, Aurora Fire Department, and Brookings Ambulance treated both men at the scene. Koopman was later transported to a local hospital for additional medical evaluation.
Legal Considerations: Investigators issued Bogstad a citation for failing to stop at the stop sign. When a driver ignores a posted stop and causes a collision, they may be held responsible for injuries and property damage resulting from the crash.
In a case like this, the injured party—Koopman—may be able to pursue a personal injury claim to recover costs associated with hospital bills, lost wages, and vehicle damage. South Dakota law allows injury victims to file civil claims when another driver’s violation contributes to the crash.
Ongoing Investigation: The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident. Officials said both vehicles and the trailer were totaled in the crash. Damage estimates remain pending.
I hope both drivers recover quickly and commend local emergency crews for their swift response to a high-impact crash.
