Avery Allen Reed, 30, Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash Involving 18-Wheeler in Alabama

Decatur, Alabama  (January 6, 2026) — A three-vehicle collision involving an 18-wheeler in Decatur claimed the life of Avery Allen Reed, a 30-year-old man who later died from his injuries, according to the Morgan County Coroner and local authorities.

Incident Details: The crash occurred just before 3:00 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Highway 67 and Refuge Headquarters Road. Emergency responders from the Decatur Police Department, Decatur Fire Department, and Decatur Morgan EMS were dispatched to the scene following reports of a serious multi-vehicle collision involving a commercial truck.

Authorities said Reed was injured in the crash and transported to Morgan County Hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Reed later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn.

Police reported that a second male was also injured in the collision and was taken to Decatur Morgan Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. No information has been released regarding the identity of the second injured person or the condition of the 18-wheeler’s driver. Officials have not disclosed which vehicle Reed was traveling in at the time of the crash or how the three vehicles came into contact.

Investigation: The Decatur Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. In collisions involving multiple vehicles and an 18-wheeler, investigators typically focus on traffic flow, vehicle positioning, and whether any driver failed to yield or made an unsafe maneuver in the moments leading up to the collision.

Investigators are expected to examine physical evidence from the scene, including vehicle damage patterns, debris distribution, and the final resting positions of all vehicles involved. Authorities will likely review skid marks, braking evidence, and surveillance footage to assess vehicle speeds and driver reaction times, particularly considering the longer stopping distance required for commercial trucks. They will analyze if the truck driver had sufficient time and space to react.

Legal Considerations: Crashes involving 18-wheelers often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the extreme size and weight disparity between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. From a civil standpoint, determining liability in a multi-vehicle crash can be complex, particularly when fault is not immediately apparent.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Avery Allen Reed may consider pursuing a wrongful death claim. This claim could help address medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of future financial support, and the emotional toll of losing a loved one so suddenly. While no action can truly ease the pain of such a profound loss, seeking accountability through the legal process can be an important step for families.

I extend my sincere condolences to Avery’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
